How do I stop my teeth from moving after clear aligners?

Like braces, you'll need to wear a retainer after clear aligners. Retainer purchases are also needed if you want to be eligible for our Treatment Guarantee. Our led orthodontist, Dr. Tania Aguilar recommends wearing a retainer for the first 3 months for most of the day. After, the initial 3 months you can wear your retainer at night.

Retainers are one of the most important phases because they will guarantee our treatment in the long term. Use the last clear aligner until your retainers arrive, so you guarantee that your teeth do not move.

Do teeth have a memory?

Teeth always want to return to their initial position, it is called dental memory. It is extremely important for the first 3 months to wear the aligner most of the day. The following months the retainer can be used at night.

Dr. Tania Aguilar, our Lead Orthodontist, recommends the use of retainers for at least one year. This will help the teeth settle into their new position more securely.

Why do I need to wear a retainer after I complete my clear aligner treatment?

Teeth move. Even though braces and clear aligners do everything they can to straighten teeth. Teeth will move back to their position prior to your teeth straightening treatment.

Did you know it takes about 9 - 12 months for the body to build up the bone needed to stabilise your teeth and ensure they don't move back after clear aligner treatment? That's why retainer wear is crucial after any teeth straightening or clear aligner treatment.

How long do I need to wear a retainer for post-clear aligner treatment?

Our lead orthodontist recommends wearing your retainer for 3 months full time, followed by nighttime wear, indefinitely. That’s forever nighttime wear if you don’t want to see your straight teeth shift. To remain eligible for Wondersmile’s Treatment Guarantee, you’ll need to purchase retainers every 4-6 months and upload all required teeth progress photos.

How do I take care of my retainers?

Clean your retainers and your teeth before you put them in, like you would your clear aligners.

Brush with a clean toothbrush with mild liquid soap if needed morning and night.

Never use hot water as this can melt the retainer. Give them a deep clean every so often. You can use an aligner cleaning solution or cleaning tablets.

Retainer care is identical to aligner care. The difference between retainers and clear aligners is that retainers do not generate any movement. As their name indicates, they retain the tooth in the final position. They are also made of different materials, the retainer tends to feel more rigid than the clear aligner.

What happens if I don't clean my retainer?

If you don't clean your retainer it will look dirty and may show signs of discolouration. It will also smell. In addition, it can trap food particles that can lead to tooth erosion or decay.

When wearing retainers, the teeth are completely covered by plastic. The plastic prevents contact with normal saliva flow, which helps protect the teeth from damage. So, if you don't brush your teeth before meals and you put your retainers in, the acid released from the plaque can begin to damage your teeth. That's why it's important that you brush your teeth regularly, especially after every meal and snack. If you can't brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. Retainers are completely safe to wear, as long as you keep up with your oral hygiene.
