What is gap teeth?
Gap teeth (Diastema) is a space or gap between two teeth. There can be gaps between any two teeth, however, it is particularly common between the upper front teeth. Gap teeth are a type of malocclusion – a misalignment of the teeth and bite. Other common malocclusions include crooked teeth and teeth crowding.
What causes gap teeth?
Gap teeth are a common orthodontic concern and can form for a number of reasons. The most common causes of gap teeth include:
Genetics: Genetics play a huge role in your dental structure. You may be prone to gap teeth if your family members have experienced gapped teeth;
Natural development: Our teeth usually have spaces between them when they first come through. The arrival of our canine teeth often closes any gaps, however in some cases, gaps remain;
Missing, extra or small teeth: Some of us are born with missing or undersized teeth which leaves a gap. In less common cases, you may be born with extra teeth in the bone which can prevent other teeth from coming through and this leaves a gap;
Large jaws: Some of us are born with large jaws and small teeth which can cause gap teeth;
Large Labial Fraenum: Sounds science-y right? Put your tongue between your front teeth and top lip, try to reach the top of your mouth. The tissue you feel in the middle is called the upper Labial Fraenum. If oversized, this tissue can cause gap teeth;
Thumb sucking: It’s true, prolonged habits of thumb sucking put pressure on the front teeth, causing them to pull forward and create gap teeth;
Incorrect swallowing reflexes: In older children and adults, gap teeth can develop from incorrect swallowing reflexes. Rather than the tongue positioning itself at the roof of the mouth while swallowing, the tongue may push against the front teeth; Dentists refer to this as a Tongue Thrust. This may seem like a harmless reflex, but too much pressure on the front teeth can cause a separation.
Can my gap get bigger with age?
Yes, teeth are constantly shifting and growing. Whilst it’s most noticeable in our younger years while the jaw is still growing, many people also find that their teeth continue to shift throughout their life. This may mean that gaps in teeth can get bigger over the years. If left untreated, gap teeth can:
Increase the risk of plaque deposits that lead to tooth decay, bad breath and even tooth loss;
A large gap between teeth can cause crowding in neighbouring teeth, causing a misaligned bite;
In most mismatched teeth and jaw cases, gap teeth symptoms are aesthetic, sometimes resulting in self-consciousness when smiling.
It’s important to note that Diastemas (gap teeth) can also develop from gum disease, which is a type of infection. In this case, inflammation damages the gums and tissue supporting the teeth. This can lead to tooth loss and gaps between teeth. Signs of gum disease include red and swollen gums, bone loss, loose teeth, and bleeding gums.
